gilded- asks:

Hi Felice, I've always wondered this you see I've followed your personal blog for a while and you'll occasionally say some pretty harsh things about religion and I always wondered do you believe in tolerance for other beliefs? I think sometimes you were just irritated with some remarks and that is why you responded with kind of biting comments toward different religions. I think tolerance is important when it comes to different belief patterns because without tolerance we can't have patience and ultimately some peace. Differences can be conquered with tolerance I think, and I was just wondering what your opinion is on tolerance? Do you believe in it? Does it make a difference in your eyes?

GAR answers:

Tolerance is a funny word. To me, ‘tolerance’ is allowing someone to piss you off/offend you whilst you sit and take it quietly. I wouldn’t ‘tolerate’ someone walking in my house and pissing on my floor, I’d probably punch them in the face, (thank you Amazing Atheist) so if I really disagree with something or what someone is doing, I shouldn’t have to ‘tolerate’ it at all. Technically what you’re doing is saying that everyone should respect each others beliefs, which quite frankly, is bullshit. If someone ‘believes’ that racism okay, I’m not going to respect it. If someone ‘believes’ that homophobia is okay, I’m not going to respect it. When you’re talking about beliefs in general you have to be careful, because you can’t just apply the rule of respect to religion then exempt everything else: it just doesn’t work like that. I don’t believe anyone should be forced to tolerate or respect anything that they disagree with. That’s a pretty fucked up concept to me.
